A small talk with Japanese IT Specialist- Mr. Yoshimi Sasaoka- Deputy General Director of GDS
On the occasion of Vietnam information security day 2014 in Hanoi (04th December 2012), VNMedia has a small talk to Japanese IT Specialist- Mr. Yoshimi Sasaoka- Deputy General Director of GDS about data privacy and security for enterprises.
Q1. Recently, Vietnam has experienced some big troubles relating to database securities. How do you think about the importance of database protection with high security in Vietnam, whether enterprises pay enough attention?
I believe those troubles are not only happened on the Database but other IT resources belong to the enterprises also. Unfortunately, here in Vietnam, I am afraid to say the topsider of each enterprise need to pay attention on to IT. It might be caused the IT is just a supporting function of the company and not be emphasized on their business map. I am sure now it is high time to review the risk of IT resources and build the plan how to mitigate the risk, compare with the plan how the enterprises outside of Vietnam perform it, following to major three IT security perspectives, we call it “C.I.A” (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability). As to GDS, we provide secured and robust facility to locate their IT resources with back-upped uninterrupted power supply and the best environment continuously, to strongly back-up the business of Vietnamese enterprises.
Q2. With experience of NTTCom operating 100 DCs over the world, in your opinion, what Vietnamese enterprises in general and IT companies, online content providers specifically, should do to protect their database?
They need to protect their critical IT resources include their database. It does not depend on the business domain of the enterprise but how much their system became critical for their daily business. Although having said that, I can say the enterprise who deal data and IT information for doing their main business, like Banking, Financing, Manufacturer (CAD data etc.) and Online-content service provider has higher tendency to utilize Datacenter.
There is a very simple way to check, do they need to secure it or not. 1. List up the IT resources (database, internal IT system, email, files, customer information etc.), 2. Just assume if each of them become unavailable for 1 hour, half day, a day, 3 days and so on, how is the impact onto their business?, 3. Just assume if each of them has been leaked unintentionally, how is the impact onto their business? You can image now how much the system is important for your business, and if the quantified risk is more than paying the fee to locate your servers in Datacenter, better migrate the servers into Datacenter to protect them and be operated under ISO 27001 certified
GDS operation.
Q3. What makes GDS confident about your services relating to data securities, what is your difference from other service providers?
GDS have 3 strong points for our business to provide secureness to the customers. The first is the completion level of our robust and Tier-3 level facility. The facility reinforced and earthquake-proof up to Japanese intensity 7, however there is little earthquake in Hanoi, the strength of the structure is one of evaluation point. And Tier-3 means we have enough back up equipment not only for the power outage but enable us to do the maintenance work for our own facility without the service interruption. (We call it, “Concurrently maintainable”) The second is the secureness (Physical access) and connectivity (IT access) of GDS datacenter. GDS is located in one of industrial park and limited access to the premises, also no busy traffic around the Datacenter, and GDS facility is used only for datacenter, that means the personnel who access to the building has been registered and authorized. Customer can choose any major network in our datacenter (Multi carriers available). The third is Built-in Japanese NTT standard. We have put NTT’s know-how into the design of our datacenter which is not mentioned in documents in the market but , and also put it into GDS operations. We also have periodical audit by NTT every year to make sure the operation has been properly performed and managed.
Q4. Is the premium quality of NTTCom DC service applied in Vietnam and how?
Yes, we provide Premium quality to the customer by our facility, those design and NTT standard operation. Why we provide the service is, we are sure there are many customers who is not satisfied with the service in other datacenter and we should be the one to provide such a high quality service by operation processes and management method with beneficial use of the relationship between NTT. We are happy that major customers gradually have realized the datacenter operation need to have a good balance with robust facility and sophisticated operation. We redirect all daily effort toward providing five-star service in Datacenter in Vietnam.
Q5. With only one DC in Thang Long IP in Hanoi, how do you provide service to customers in the South? Is there any difficulties?
We are giving full attention to expand our service capacity from our technical resource, management and the market. Actually, building the datacenter is not difficult. What GDS is taking care most is the embedded customers and customers in future. We need to be careful and be strict to business status. If our business goes wrong, it will impact the customers’ business very much. Please imagine a Condominium case. If the operation becomes tight for the cost due to the bad financial condition of the operation company, the service grade will be down and may have incidents and problems, leaking water, no hot water, messy common space etc., but if you have long term contract and have been settled there, it is not so easy to move out.
I can say GDS can serve the same level of the service in the south soon based on concrete business plan within a few years
